Part A: I have always loved music. When I was little I was very persistent on wanting to learn how to play the violin. My mom thought that I just saw a violin or someone playing one and I did not really want to learn; however, I kept asking. I started taking lessons when I was in first grade and I loved it. I remember my first song I played was Hot Crossed Buns and I would play it all the time because I was excited to be playing an actual song. I took lessons up until I was in eight grade because my mom said I wasn't going to do anything with it in the future. I still play now because it soothes me and helps me think if I am stressing out.My sister played piano so I would hear her practice all the time and I taught myself how to play piano while I was bored. In elementary school I was also in chorus, many of our songs were Christmas songs for the winter concert. A few songs I vividly remember from out of school are Another Night by The Real McCoy and Rhythm is a Dancer by Snap!; my mom used to play these on the way to Bally's all the time and I knew all the words and my feet would dance the whole time in the car.
I also played in my middle school band because the teacher had played in a band with my grandpa. I played the bells, chimes, xylophone, and vibraphone because I know how the piano notes are and they are set up the same. While there, everyone in band worked very hard in both concert and symphonic bands and we won our adjudications. We played a song called Images of Ireland that I can still remember and play on the piano. Mr. Caporizzo, my band instructor, was such a huge inspiration and he had such high expectations. It was amazing to see a man get a group of 13 year olds to focus and work that hard. In high school I quit band because I did not want to do marching band and I did not like the instructor. I always listen to music and my iPod became my best friend in high school because in study hall I would put it on and block everyone out. I listen to country, pop, rock, and other types of music. Country is my favorite genre of music to listen to. I would have to say that opera and classical are my least favorite. I also STRONGLY HATE and will leave a room, turn off the radio, or whatever just to get away from any song that Miley Cyrus sings or is featured in. In the last 24 hours I have played Romeo and Juliet by Nina Rota. I have listened to Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton today as well. A song I couldn't live without is Don't Stop Believin' By Journey; because I have always loved this song, it was a song my friends and I listened to for my birthday, and it is the first song my boyfriend sang to me. My influential people are my Mr. Cap, my violin teachers, and myself.
Part B: I know that a lot of people do not know I can play violin and piano. It is not something I mention or talk about so when it comes into conversation people are surprised. I think that the exercise reveals that I am a bit more musically inclined than many would think. It also reveals that I have a wide variety of music interests. I can listen to a lot of different genres and be happy; I appreciate music, some music I do not appreciate though. I like playing and listening to music; however, I sing when I am alone for the most part. I think that most people would be surprised about how involved I have been with music. Journal #2 I identify with people from group b because I do sing; however, I sing alone. I sing in my car and in the shower, but I am uncomfortable singing around peers and sometimes family.
I sing with my sister sometimes in the car when the music is up high enough so we cannot hear each other. I am now comfortable to sing in front of my boyfriend of 5 years, and that
took a long time. I am shy and do not like speaking in class or giving presentations, so singing is something I will not do in front of people. Journal #3 Singing in Private: I have a longer drive to school than many students' 5 minute walk to class; therefore, my car and steering wheel are very familiar with my voice. I sing in my car like I am actually a good singer and it is my song. I am also a fan of singing in the shower. Singing alone helps me get my emotions out or celebrate when I am excited. If I am upset I put on a song to fit that and I sing my heart out and I usually feel a little bit better. I am comfortable singing alone, but do not ask me to sing in front of anyone or I will freeze up and become mute. Journal #4
I had some fun with the Karaoke Party. I was sick while using it so I just laughed along knowing I would miss the mark and not be able to stay in the green that much. It is fun to use and I enjoyed myself. While using the Sing and See, I surprised myself. I also did not know that my range was as far as it was. I am E3 to E5. I did not give myself much credit when I was starting to do it and did not think I would be able to do a great job so I had to do it a second time to take it seriously. I am learning that you actually have to be more confident and listen to how good you can actually sing to improve. If you think you stink you will stink. If you say "Hey, I'm not that bad," you will actually be surprised at what you hear. Journal #5 I started this skill development at my house because I have both my piano and violin and I commute. I took violin lessons, but my sister took piano lessons. I have always had a passion for music so I started teaching myself piano. I know how to read music so that is not a problem. The problem is, the violin does not have two different lines of music. When I would read music and teach myself piano I would do only the treble line first, after I would learn that and be confident in it I would start slowly adding in the base line. The Ode to Romeo and Juliet Theme has been in our house for so long, the sheet music is discolored and we had to make our own cover to preserve it. I also played a song I have not played in a while on my violin. I recorded myself playing these songs on UJAM and added background music to mix it together. Ujam is a great resource. I also used Noteflight to compose my own music. It is a great website because it is free and you get to listen to the composition being played through. I haven't contacted anyone because I do not live on campus and it is not easy for me to work with people because I work after class most days. I also feel like my skill development is incredibly different from everyone else's plans so I chose that it was best to just work alone. I think I am pretty good with what I am working on and just want to know if you can view my compositions on Noteflight because I know someone I tried to show couldn't view it. Journal #6 MultipleIntelligence My three highest areas are music, bodily kinesthetic, and social (interpersonal). I could have guessed these because I love music, working out, and talking to people. When I have my own classroom I plan on using music and movement activities. I also know that it is helpful for me to remember things by singing a song or putting words in a sing-song way for me to remember. I know there are tons of resources and songs out there to help students remember things or I could make my own. I also have good communication skills and am good at reading peoples expressions; therefore, if I see that an activity is not getting the reaction I want I will change it or ask the students what would make it better. Music is one of my skills so it doesn't need to intersect, movement intersects perfectly because there are a lot of movement activities. http://www.literacynet.org/mi/assessment/findyourstrengths.html Journal #7
My experience with personal skill development was really good, I enjoyed myself. I did not collaborate because it is harder for me to getting in touch with people and working with them because I commute. I also had observations and work and couldn't stay after classes. I prefer working with myself on these sort of projects. I also think that my skill development was extremely different than anyone else's. My greatest challenge was making my compositions, I am a perfectionist and spent hours and hours in the middle of the night putting just parts of one song together just how I wanted it. My greatest satisfaction was the final product of my compositions. I learned that I am capable of so much more than I thought. I also found out how much I missed working with my violin and piano. I would like to learn more about the piano and compose better songs.
